Anyone else doing BLW?

My LO is still EBF.  We haven't really started solids yet, but we are letting him play with cucumber sticks (he loves to teethe on them) and he has managed to get a few pieces of broccoli and chicken up to his mouth to taste them.  He can't yet sit up on his own, but as soon as he can, we are going to start him on finger foods in earnest.  I'm pretty excited about skipping purees and cereals.

Re: Anyone else doing BLW?

  • I mostly do BLW, but I still do cereals and some purees.  I don't start the BLW until 6 months, but I start solids at 5 or 5 1/2, so that month I do cereals and purees.  Once 6 months comes along I start putting the actual pieces of food on her tray but I still do some cereal in the morning and a couple tablespoons of purees throughout the day until about 7 1/2 months.

  • My gameplan is to start with the purees after DS turns 6 months, then transition to actual pieces of food around 7/8 months...of course this is in my perfect world. We will see what happens once reality hits!!

Can I ask what BLW is?

BLW = Baby Led Weaning.   For more info: https://www.babyledweaning.com/

I just finished reading Gil Rapley's book on the subject, which was really  helpful.

  • We did with our first and will with dd2. My H and I both agree it was one of the best parenting decisions we made with dd1.

I very much believe that food before one is just for fun, so we're playing it by ear.

So do I.  And actually, that is one of the tenets of BLW.  Playing with food between 6-9 months helps develop hand-eye coordination and the pincher grasp.  During the early months of BLW the idea is that your baby will still get the vast majority of its nutrition from breast milk or formula.

  • We will be doing BLW.  We have been doing some purees for the past few weeks and we will drop the once he turns 6 months and can really sit up.  We started purees as he was drinking over 40 oz and was reaching for our food everytime we ate anything.

  • We'll do a hybrid since it freaks DH out... I let him gum a banana today so I think he's going to be all over it... chewy toys? Mmm hmmm

  • We are planning to!  I've wanted to do BLW since before DD was born and have several friends that have done it with their kids.  I'm almost finished reading the book and we've been putting DD in her high chair with toys while we're eating dinner so she's used to being in it.  We won't start solids with her until 6 months though, at the advice of our pediatrician and the BLW suggests this as well.
